England
- Local Authorities (LAs) or governing bodies decide the timing of school holidays in England.
- The Standard School Year (SSY) sets the overall pattern of the school year for maintained schools. LAs may either choose to follow the SSY or apply variations to fit local circumstances after consultation.
- Schools outside the maintained sector set the school year independently.
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
- The school term is set solely by the LA.
